First Round Foster's Community Grants have been awarded to the following projects...

The Song Room Inc - Creative Learning

NSW - Australia

Participation in creative learning through music and the arts experience is a medium for achieving broader outcomes for children such as enhanced learning, self esteem and social connection. The Song Room will provide much needed music & arts programs for schools in five targeted regions of NSW.  The schools include children disadvantaged through a range of socio-economic circumstances, disability and recent immigration, who would otherwise not have the opportunity to participate in such valuable learning experiences.

Curious Works - Project Reason

NSW - Australia

Reason is a community outreach program using emerging artists from CuriousWorks. The group will work with "Villawood Koori Kids", developing a film about their life and personal stories. The project will be carried out in partnership with Woodville Community Centre and Filigree Films.  Through their association with Woodville Community Centre, some of the kids have re-learnt their traditional language and are embracing their culture in contemporary ways.  The project allows an opportunity for creative expression and learning from each other for both groups of young people. Mallee Family Care - Chances for Children

VIC - Australia

Chances for Children is a program which works to create opportunities for young people in North Western Victoria and South West NSW.  It currently supports 400 kids who are endeavouring to realise their potentials in education, sporting and cultural pursuits.  The program is working to address the challenges which confront young people in isolated areas and the need to ensure their future contribution to the communities in which they live.

Community Technology Centres Association Inc

QLD - Australia

The Caring for Carers Program aims to develop and deliver computer based information technology skills training for carers, to assist them with communication and isolation when they are housebound with their dependant.  Programs will cover using the internet, voice over internet communication, community on-line forums, using email, and computer security.

Taralye - The Oral Language Centre for Deaf Children

VIC - Australia

Delivering an outreach program in Western Metropolitan Melbourne, Taralye will provide inclusive early intervention services to hearing-impaired children and their families via a partnership approach with local kindergartens.

Young Playwrights' Theater

Washington DC - United States

The project will deliver a series of in-school workshops designed to enhance student literacy, creative expression and collaboration through the art of writing plays.  Students will learn how to craft a play through improvisation, free writing, editing, rehearsal and performance.

Green Map System, Inc.

New York - United States

Green Map System is co-ordinating a world-wide project over a 3 year period that will deliver an updated global iconography for locally-created environmental maps.  Green Maps are being made and used in more than 350 locales around the world. Each utilizes consistent icons to identify, promote and link the community's natural, cultural and sustainability sites.  The project will clarify, reorganise and promote Green Map's standardised environmental icons.

Community Health Clinic Ole - Calistoga expansion project

California - United States

The project will enhance medical services to Napa Valley's low income residents.  Many local residents live well below US federal poverty line and do not have access to affordable health care.  The project will see the health centre relocate to a nearby location, resulting in broader services offered for longer hours during the week.

Big hART Inc - Radio Holiday

TAS - Australia

Working with marginalised people from rural and remote communities of north west Tasmania, Big hART develops personal skills through participation in focussed arts / cultural projects with leaders in digital arts, film, visual arts and oral history.  The work will be featured in a number arts festivals nationally.  Big hART Inc. has received a number of awards for their work to date including Australian Heads of Government Awards and an Australian Film Institute Award.

Kentucky State University - Mentoring Children

Kentucky - United States

This community outreach mentoring program emphasises one-to-one mentor/youth relationships combined with a range of individual and group activities including self-concept and esteem building, violence prevention, youth development and parental involvement. Youth are encouraged to become socially competent and connected, committed to their education and community, and to develop appropriate coping skills to reduce delinquent and anti-social behavior.

California Autism Foundation

California - United States

Currently in operation, The San Francisco Chocolate Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the California Autism Foundation providing employment opportunities for adults with disabilities whilst generating income to support school, residential and day programs for people with Autism.  This large scale project will deliver a new purpose built chocolate factory, using best practice sustainability features creating a model facility in which people with disabilities would make fine chocolates that are sold worldwide.

South West Sports Assembly - Takes 2 to Tandem

VIC - Australia

To increase the physical activity and social connectedness of people with a disability in the community.  Specifically via the provision of a tandem bicycle to enable people with visual impairments and other disabilities, with the support of an able bodied rider, to enjoy the physical, emotional and social benefits of cycling.

Volunteer Center of Napa Valley - Aged to perfection

California - United States

This project aims to attract and engage older Americans to participate in social projects across the region.  Community organisations are encouraged to recognise the value of older Americans, and taught to recognise and leverage their business and professional experience.  Individuals are also engaged in meaningful ways to encourage them to contribute their time and energy for the greater community good.

Upper Hume Community Health Service & HotHouse

VIC - Australia

Embers is a play based on interviews of people affected by the 2003 NE Victorian bushfires, the worst in community memory.  Touring affected regional communities, Embers will fulfill the audience expectations as an excellent piece of verbatim theatre, but also to be a therapeutic engagement of community members in their recovery from the lived experience of bushfire and threat.

Northern Area Community & Youth Services Inc

SA - Australia

Aiming to address educational and/or social under achievement in primary school aged children due to family disadvantage, the project will see a cluster of 4 primary schools working on the development of a collaborative & co-ordinated service model. Operating from a 'family learning centre' at a central primary school, the project will deliver a 'whole of family' learning programme.

Nestles Rowing Club - Disability rowing program

VIC - Australia

The provision of a disrow boat to further develop people with disabilities.  A disrow boat is designed to be adapted to suit multiple disability types, allowing people with all kinds of disabilities to participate in the sport of rowing.

Maranoa Health Enhancement Program- Men's Health Sessions

QLD - Australia

The Maranoa Health Enhancement Program's primary aim is to raise the profile of men's health issues in rural communities. A range of initiatives is planned to educate men about existing services, improve access to services and conduct health promotion activities.

Finding Workable Solutions Inc - Salvage Yard

SA - Australia

Finding Workable Solutions has operated for over 17 years, providing employment opportunities for people with a disability.  This project provides for a salvage yard as part of a resource recovery social enterprise, which has been operating for 18 months. Long-term employment will be created for up to 24 people who will salvage, repair and resell goods and provide a hard waste pick-up service for the community.

East Grampians Health Service - Rainwater tank farm

VIC - Australia

Rural community project to capture and harvest rainwater to a Central Tank Farm and Treatment Plant where it will be stored and used for general 'day to day' water needs throughout areas of the health service, and also for the irrigation of gardens. The project is a 'pilot' on using harvested rainwater for use in the acute facility and for drinking water within a hospital environment, which would be a first for the health industry.

Centacare Employment - Doomadgee youth initiative

QLD - Australia

Assisting Indigenous communities in the Gulf Region, the Doomadgee Youth Initiative will provide training and development for 20 young women.  Designed by an Aboriginal elder, the camp style program will include workshops developing particular skills for the women.  It is hoped the program can then be localised and delivered by these women in their communities.
